A loud exhaust note is the most obvious sign, but rattling, blowing sounds, poor emissions, or a check engine light can also point to an exhaust problem. We inspect the full system to identify whether the issue is a joint, bracket, box, or catalytic converter.

It can. A leaking exhaust, damaged catalytic converter, or emissions-related fault may lead to an MOT failure. We can inspect the system before your MOT and advise on any repairs needed.

Not always. Some faults can be fixed by replacing or repairing a single section, such as a back box or a blown joint. We recommend the most sensible repair based on the condition of the system and the value of the vehicle.

A simple back box replacement usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes. A full exhaust system replacement can take two to three hours, depending on the vehicle and the extent of the work.

It might be possible to drive, but it isn’t recommended. A leaking exhaust can let fumes enter the cabin, increase noise, and in some cases affect engine performance and emissions. If you notice a sudden change in noise or smell, it’s safer to have the system inspected as soon as you can.

Common signs include a louder exhaust note, rattling or hissing sounds, visible smoke, reduced fuel economy, vibrations through the steering wheel or seat, and sometimes a check engine light. Any of these symptoms are a good reason to book an exhaust check.

Minor issues such as small holes, cracked joints, or isolated rust can sometimes be repaired or patched, or fixed by replacing a single section. If corrosion is extensive or key components like the catalytic converter are damaged, a replacement section or full system may be the safer, longer‑term option—we’ll explain which applies to your car.
